Employee Engagement Survey Results

Rich Boyer did a nice job of providing a quick overview of the IPS Employee Engagement Survey results at the Annual Conference break-out session. In order to give staff more time to study the data, I am posting a category each day over the next two weeks so that you can see the 2011 results compared to the 2013 results.

According to Modern Think's analysis, positive scores of 75% or more and negative scores of less than 10% are excellent scores. Likewise, positive scores of less than 45% and negative scores of more than 19% are red flag areas. The same scale is used to code the scores throughout the survey results.

Those questions specifically related to agencies will be addressed at the individual agency level. I have already met with the management teams and I am expecting a plan from them in September.

Those questions that are overall IPS related will be addressed in a variety of formats in the coming months.  Strategy teams, Baldrige Teams and the Leadership Academy all will be studying the results. More to come on specific plans.  For now, here are the overall results.

Benchmarking IPS-like organizations

Are we entirely unique?

Sometimes we think IPS is so unique that we cannot benchmark our services and operation. Recently our counterparts at UNC Chapel Hill visited Georgia.  Although there are few one-to-one comparisons, a look at other universities work in government outreach can be enlightening.  Below is the link to School of Government Dean Mike Smith's blog post about the trip. See any similarities? Perhaps a group of IPSers should take a trip to Georgia (before the football game in the fall!)

IPS Resource Guide

Ever wonder who in IPS is an expert on OSHA?  A quick check of the IPS resource guide on the Intranet site reveals Walter Idol, Bryan Lane, Richard Stokes, Bill Wiley and Dennis Wolf!

What about communications? Another quick check reveals 12 names!

The IPS Resource Guide was developed at the request of previous strategy team members who wanted an easy way for staff across the institute to find expertise they may need.  You can run a list by agency or by key word search.

Each staff member is responsible for updating their own information. The advocacy team representative for each agency is responsible for making sure names are removed when staff leave IPS and for helping new employees add their information.

Check it out. You may find we have expertise you are not aware of!

"How Smart People Collaborate"

Recently Don Green shared an article about "How Smart People Collaborate" by Kevin Daum.  I thought the seven points should be shared and I encourage you to read the entire article.

  1. Choose Participants Carefully
  2. Remove Quiet Politeness
  3. Establish Communication Protocols
  4. Use a Specific Ideation Process
  5. Give Requirement and Permission
  6. Work with Respect
  7. Broadcast Recognition and Gratitude
We have a number of strategy implementation teams and Baldrige teams at work this year. Using these principles could help them be more successful!

Supply Chain Management and IPS?

The UT Global Supply Chain Institute recently concluded a study of the Top Ten Game Changing Supply Chain Trends.  As I read a summary of the article, I was surprised to see how many of the concepts relate to the Baldrige Criteria and also relate to our work at IPS.
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Collaborative Relationships
  • Process Integrations
  • Information Sharing
  • Talent Management
Don't these concepts sound familiar? I encourage you to read the summary of the study, and there is a link at the bottom of the web page that will take you to the complete study for more information.
